A computer game can be a large software project done by a team of 100 people working on it for many months. But there is also the possibility to make a small and nice prototype in minimum time. Such games are typically made at game jams. A game jam is an event where video games are made for a certain theme in a short time span, usually between 24 and 72 hours. This is challenging for you software engineering abilities as well as for your creativity and design skills. Game Jams can be a physical gathering or being done online. In this talk, which takes place a week before the Winter Game Jam at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt, I introduce some game jams and explain the challenges and benefits from such events. I will also show how particular game jams like Ludum Dare or the OneHour Game Jam work and will introduce to some tools, sources and methods that can help to "survive" a game jam.
