Events

Die alljährlich stattfindende Tagung Austrochip, in deren Rahmen akademische Institutionen und Industriebetriebe ihre Projekte und Forschungsarbeiten vorstellen, wird abwechselnd von den unten angeführten österreichischen Universitätsinstituten und einer Fachhochschule veranstaltet. Die Austrochip dient sowohl als Plattform zur Präsentation der neuesten Aktivitäten auf dem Gebiet der integrierten Schaltungen als auch als Diskussions- und Kontaktforum zwischen akademischen Institutionen und Industriebetrieben. Die Austrochip findet dieses Jahr zum zwanzigsten Male statt, wobei die Organisation dieses Jahr vom Institut für Elektronik der Technischen Universität Graz in Kooperation mit Joanneum Research übernommen wird.

Title: Privacy and Security issues in Published or Outsourced Databases Speaker: Dimitris Sacharidis (Institute of the Mangement for Information Systems - IMIS Greece)   Abstract: The concept of k-anonymity has received considerable attention due to the need of several organizations to release microdata without revealing the identity of individuals. Standard anonymization techniques assume the existence of a public database that a malign person may use to breach privacy. Our work utilizes such public knowledge to construct anonymized databases that offer the same anonymity guarantees while having more utility.   In the outsourced database model, a data owner publishes her database through a third-party server; i.e., the server hosts the data and answers user queries on behalf of the owner. Since the server may not be trusted, or may be compromised, users need a means to verify that answers received are both authentic and complete, i.e., that the returned data have not been tampered with, and that no qualifying results have been omitted. Our work focuses on indexing techniques that guarantee authenticity and completeness in both centralized and distributed settings.

The fourth edition of S4D Conference will be held in Vienna, Austria from September 19-20, 2012 and is co-lcoated with the FDL Conference. The conference has evolved from several industry workshops organized by ECSI into the areas of debug and provides a forum for work and standardization efforts related to debug of electronic systems, with a focus on multi-core and multi-accelerator SoCs. The conference addresses a vast set of requirements from system and SoC companies with regard to debug methods and tools. It includes efforts from IEEE and other standards working groups, including the Nexus 5001 Forum, IJTAG (IEEE P1687), IEEE 1149.7, MIPI, industry working groups including OCP-IP, the Multicore Association (MCA), the Accellera - SPIRIT Consortium and Eclipse and industry R&D projects contributing to debug and related tools and methods development. The S4D Conference event also allows presentation and discussion of existing and new commercial debug tools and products related to electronic (silicon and software) methods, devices, and systems. In summary, the S4D conference provides a forum for discussing research, scientific and commercial development in the areas of system, software, SoC and silicon debug.

Speaker:  Pavol Zavarsky   Abstract: The focus of the presentation will be on two research-intensive fields of information security: (1) detection of web application vulnerabilities, and (2) methods of detecting malware that has evaded enterprise anti-malware services and successfully infected host computers. The presentation will start by outlining major challenges in detecting advanced web application vulnerabilities. To illustrate research opportunities, results of performance of current state-of-the-art black-box web vulnerability scanners in detecting web application vulnerabilities will be analyzed. Then, the presentation will address the fact that some percentage of new-born malware has always evaded detection by standard enterprise-class anti-malware services and security controls. Various aspects of obfuscation will be analyzed, results in detecting operational malware by its tactics of obfuscation will be shown, and possible avenues that might be explored will be discussed. Finally, by comparing detection capabilities of forensic investigation utilities based on live response and memory image analysis in detecting SSDT hooking by bona fide Windows kernel rootkits, the presentation will illustrate the pressing, practical importance of continued research into memory forensics and improvement of memory forensic utilities.
